The news media is known for sensationalizing stories of arrests and then promptly forgetting about the cases, rarely following up to report on trials, plea deals or dismissals.
In a departure from this tradition, the Red & Black recently ran an article following up on University of Georgia students who had previously been in the news for their arrests for DUI, possession of marijuana and other alleged offenses, letting readers know of the current status of their cases.
One such case began in March of last year when a student was arrested for DUI and underage possession of alcohol while he was driving a borrowed car. According to police, the man gave arresting officers another person's name, identification and phone number. He was released from custody under that person's name.
According to police, that person later saw his name in a newspaper article about the arrest. He then contacted police and told them he was not actually the person who'd been arrested that night.
The driver of the borrowed car was then apparently identified and arrested again, this time under what police say is his real name. The second arrest included charges of identity fraud and impersonating another in the acknowledgement of bail, giving false information and obstruction.
His case is currently pending, Red & Black reports.
Another updated case includes that of a former UGA student arrested in April of 2011 for graffiti and marijuana possession.
He was accused of spraypainting "frodo lives" and other phrases around campus and Athens.
The deal he agreed to with prosecutors included pleas of guilty to 17 charges in exchange for all felony charges being reduced to misdemeanors, paying $5,841 in restitution, putting in 150 hours of community service and completing six years of probation.
